Humpback Whale

    • Belong to the same family as the blue whale, fin whale, Bryde’s whale, sei whale and minke whale.

    • Females are bigger than the males

    • Can eat up to 1.5 tons of food a day

    • Sing, and their songs are complex with each population singing its own unique song

    • Mothers and their young swim close together, often touching one another with their flippers with what appear to be gestures of affection

    • Females nurse their calves for almost a year, though it takes far longer than that for a humpback whale to reach full adulthood

    • Calves do not stop growing until they are ten years old.

    • Regularly leap from the water, landing with a tremendous splash

  • Are generally dark grey or black color with white patches on their stomach and knobs (known as tubercles) covering their head
